BILLY CRYSTAL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Billy Crystal was born on March 14th, 1948 in Long Beach, Long Island, New York with the birth name William Jacob Crystal, born to parents Jack and Helen Crystal. He was the youngest of three boys and his father was employed as a concert promoter and co-founded Commodore Records.
Crystal was exposed to the music industry quite early on in life. Sadly, at the age of fifteen he lost his father to a sudden heart attack. He tried to continue on with a normal childhood and at the age of sixteen he was doing stand up comedy.
Initially he had goals of pursuing a career as a professional baseball player. After completing High School at Long Beach High, he earned a scholarship to study at Marshall University in West Virginia. When the school never used him to play baseball, he relocated back to New York and enrolled at Nassau Community College and chose to pursue a degree in theater. Soon he transferred to New York University and continued to study Film and Television where he earned his degree in 1970.
He first found work as a substitute teacher and then found part time work as a stand up comic, forming his own improvisation group called, 3's Company. In 1976, he relocated to Los Angeles, California and began to pursue a career as an actor.
It took about a year of various small gigs before he finally got a decent break when he was cast in the television series, "Soap" (1977), which aired for four seasons. As his career progressed he continued doing stand up but also made appearances on such series as, "The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" (1982), "Saturday Night Live" (1975) and soon on such feature films as, "Running Scared" (1986) and "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987).
Along with appearing in films and on television he also started a Comic Relief show which was an annual stand-up comedy show that helped raise money for housing as well as medical care for the homeless, along with other comedians such as Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams.
As his career continued in the industry, Crystal would be seen starring in such films as, "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), "City Slickers" (1991), "Forget Paris" (1995), "Analyze This" (1999), "America's Sweethearts" (2001) and "My Giant" (1998).
He also got to work on the other side of the industry with his directing debut of the film, "Mr. Saturday Night" (1992) and then in 2001 he directed a television movie, "61*" which he served as director and executive producer on and in total, this movie earned twelve Emmy nominations.
Crystal continues to work in the industry with some of his latest appearances on, "Parental Guidance" (2012) and "Monster University" (2013). Both films will release soon and in the meantime, he remains married to his only and only wife, Janice Crystal and they have two children together. He resides in California and also owns a home in New York.
