BEVERLY GARLAND BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Beverly Garland was born on October 17th, 1926 in Santa Cruz, California with the birth name Beverly Lucy Fessenden to parents, Amelia Rose who worked as a business woman and James Atkins Fessenden who was a singer and salesman. When she was only four years old her family relocated to Glendale, California and in 1931 she made her acting debut in a kindergarten play. Beverly was an only child and grew interested in an acting career from a very young age. She began acting in little theatre in Glendale and later on in Arizona on stage productions as well.
As she became a teenager she began studying voice lessons with Anita Arliss who was the sister to Oscar winning actor, George Arliss. Her family left Los Angeles and moved to Arizona where she attended high school in Phoenix and appeared in a number of stage productions. She also gained some experience working on radio and did a number of shorts.
Garland finally made her film debut in a supporting part in, "D.O.A." (1950). The mid fifties were quite busy for Garland playing the part of a female marshal in the western, "Gunslinger" (1956) followed by a role in, "Swamp Women" and "It Conquered the World" (both 1956).
Along with an already successful career in the film industry she made television history when she became cast as the star on a series called, "Decoy" (1957) which was the first American police series that had a woman portray the starring character. Her television appearances followed with shows such as, "My Three Sons" (1960), "Coronado 9" (1960), "The Bing Crosby Show" (1964-1965) and "The Wild, Wild West" (1967-1969).
The majority of her roles on television were of her portraying suburban moms. Garland appeared on, "The Twilight Zone", "Kung Fu", "7th Heaven" and a number of other series in which she had numerous re occurring roles.
As many other actresses from her era were retiring she moved into the year 2000 working on her second 50 years in the industry. She continued to make guest star appearances on television and in 2001 the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters inducted her into it's Hall of Fame.
Beverly Garland was also a owner and operator of the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn in North Hollywood as her ex husband, Fillmore Crank was a land developer and the Garland hotel chains are named after her. She was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to television.
She married three times throughout her lifetime. First to Robert Campbell from 1945 for less then one year. Her second marriage was to Richard Garland from 1952 through 1956. Garland's final marriage was to Fillmore Crank from 1960 through his death in 1999 and the couple had two children a son, James and a daughter Carrington from their marriage. Almost ten years after losing her husband, Garland passed away on December 5th, 2008 in Hollywood Hills, California and her body was cremated.
