BARRY SULLIVAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Barry Sullivan was born on August 29th, 1912 in New York City, New York with the birth name Patrick Barry Sullivan. He was born into a family with seven children total, him being the youngest. As Sullivan grew into a man he was very tall, and very good looking therefore, many people he knew told him he should pursue a career in performing arts.
He began with working as an usher at a theater and soon was able to work his way in and make his Broadway debut in, "I Want a Policeman" (1936) at the Lyceum Theatre sadly it only lasted 47 performances and this play was followed by him being cast in three others which also were unsuccessful.
In 1942, Sullivan made a larger impact on the industry when he was cast in the play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1942) but then the next two plays he worked on were unsuccessful again.
Realizing that Broadway might not be the right direction for him to be pursuing his acting, Sullivan turned to Hollywood to try and see if he would be more successful as a film actor. His film debut was in 1943 in a Chester Morris 'B' Picture, "High Explosive" under Paramount pictures followed by a role in the western, "The Woman of the Town" (1943) under United Artists.
Even though Sullivan never reached the level of stardom he tried to pursue, he did establish himself as a decent actor and was able to make a career out of acting on stage as well as in the film and television industry. It was due to his good looks and physical features that he was able to portray an aggressive and masculine type character. Some of his later film work were in such films as, "The Gangster" (1947), "The Great Gatsby" (1949) and "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952).
Along with working as a stage and film actor, Sullivan had a number of television appearances and even had his own series, "Harbormaster" (1957) and "The Tall Man" (1958). Barry also appeared on, "The Price" (1971) and "Another Part of the Forest" (1972). He ended his acting career with a final film role in, "Oh, God!" (1977) and only on the odd occasion would make an incidental television appearance.
Barry Sullivan married three times throughout his lifetime. His first wife was a brief marriage but he fathered two children with her and ended the relationship in 1958, he then married his second wife, Gita Hall from 1958 through 1961 and together they had one more child. His third and final marriage was to Desiree Sumarra from August 4th, 1962 and it is unknown the exact date that the couple separated having no children together.
Sullivan passed away on June 6th, 1994 in Sherman Oaks, California from a respiratory ailment at the age of eighty one.
