BARBARA RUSH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Barbara Rush was born on January 4th 1927 in Denver, Colorado. She attended the University of California and then began taking acting classes at the Pasadena Playhouse. During one of her performances on stage a talent scout with Paramount Pictures took notice to Rush and signed her to a contract in 1950.
Her film debut under her contract was, "The Goldbergs" (1950) followed by a number of other films that received quite good reviews such as, "When Worlds Collide" (1951), "Quebec" (1951), "The First Legion" (1951), "Flaming Leather" (1952) and "Prince of Pirates" (1953).
In 1954 she won the Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Newcomer - Female" for her performance in, "It Came from Outer Space" (1953). She worked on two other films in 1954 before getting her big break on, "Magnificent Obsession" (1954). It was her lead role in this film that opened many more doors for her acting career.
Throughout the 50's she was cast in films such as, "Bigger Than Life" (1956), "No Down Payment" (1957), "The Young Lion" (1958) and "The Young Philadelphians" (1959). As her career entered into the 1960's besides a couple film roles on, "The Bramble Bush" (1960) and "Strangers When We Meet" (also 1960), her film career began to decline.
Rush did however manage to get involved in working on television and she made appearances on a variety of very popular shows of that era such as, "The Eleventh Hour" (1962), "Saints and Sinners" (1962-1963), "Peyton Place" (1964), "Medical Center" (1969), "Ironside" (1967) and even a guest starring role on, "Batman" (1966). Rush was also a regular cast member on the 1980's soap opera, "Flamingo Road".
Alongside a successful film career and decent career as a television actress, Rush never neglected her original love for performing on the big stage. She earned the Sarah Siddon's Ward for her lead role in, "Forty Carats" and earned her Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for her tour on, "A Woman of Independent Means" (1980), a one-woman play.
Barbara Rush has married three times. First to Jeffrey Hunter who she met when working at the Pasadena Playhouse and they were married on December 1st, 1950 through March 29th, 1955 and having one son together, Christopher born in 1952. Marriage number two was to Warren Cowan from June 14th, 1959 for ten years, divorcing on August 29th, 1969 and again having just one child, Claudia Cowan, during her second marriage. Rush's final marriage was to Jim Gruzalski on September 24th, 1970 and they remained together till October 1973.
She currently continues to act and make occasional guest appearances such as a recurring role on the television series, "7th Heaven" (1996).
