BARBARA BEL GEDDES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Barbara Bel Geddes was born on October 31st, 1922 in New York City, New York. Her father, Norman Bel Geddes was a theatrical and industrial designer who was responsible for staging more then 200 plays. Growing up around exposure to theater she was destined for a career in the industry.
When Geddes turned eighteen she began working as a stage actress and soon got her chance to work on Broadway. In 1947, she was approached by Hollywood and offered her first role in the film, "The Long Night" (1947) followed by roles in, "I remember Mama" and "Blood on the Moon" (both 1948). She was reaching a level of stardom that aloud her to appear on the cover of Life magazine in 1948. She even earned a Academy Award nomination for her role in, "I Remember Mama" for Best Supporting Actress.
As her career progressed she continued to excel on stage as well as in the film industry appearing in more successful films such as, "Panic in the Streets" (1950), "Vertigo" (1958) and "The Five Pennies" (1959). She never neglected her love of stage and earned numerous awards and honors for her stage work such as, the Woman of the Year Award by Hasty Pudding Theatricals USA as well as being nominated for a Tony Award as best Dramatic actress for her role in, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1956).
She made a number of television appearances as well throughout her career some of which included, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1955) and she was very well known for playing Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow in the series, "Dallas" (1978) for which she won an Emmy Award for best actress. In 1990, Geddes retired from acting and went into designing stationary for fun in her spare time.
Geddes married twice during her lifetime, first to Carl Schreuer from 1944 through 1951 and having one child together. Her second marriage was to Windsor Lewis from 1951 through 1972 when he passed away also having one child together.
On August 8th, 2005 Geddes passed away in Northeast Harbor, Maine from lung cancer. She was survived by her two daughters, Susan and Betsy.
