ANTHONY QUAYLE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Anthony Quayle was born on September 7th, 1913 in Southport, Lancashire in England, with the birth name John Anthony Quayle. He graduated from Rugby School and for a brief time studied at RADA.
Soon he found work in a music hall comedy act which followed with working at the Old Vic Company in 1932. After gaining a couple years of stage experience there he broke into Broadway and began adding such Broadway credits as, "The Country Wife" and a number of other Shakespearean plays.
Quayle then took a brief break from acting during World War II to serve with the Royal Artillery where he reached the rank of major. Upon completing his limitary service he returned back to his career as a stage actor and also found work as a theater director in 1946 for the production, "Crime and Punishment".
He continued working in theater as the director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon from 1948 through 1956. Some of his theater credits included, "Othello", "Much Ado About Nothing", "Henry VIII", "Titus Andronicus", "The Firstborn" and "The Barretts of Wimpole Street".
Although he loved the theater, in 1938 he also began adding film work to his resume such as, "I Stand Condemned" (1935) starring Harry Baur, Penelope Dudley-Ward and Laurence Olivier, Lilian Braithwaite, Athene Seyler, Robert Cochran and Morton Selten and "Pygmalion" (1938) starring Leslie Howard, Wilfrid Lawson, Leueen MacGrath and Wendy Hiller, although both were un-credited. He did however have a credited role in the movie, "Trelawny of the Wells" (1938) starring O.B. Clarence, Hermione Hannen, Anthony Howard and Freda Jackson.
As his acting career progressed, some of his more well known film roles included, "Pursuit of the Graf Spee" (1956) with John Gregson, Ian Hunter, Patrick Macnee, Jack Gwillim, Bernard Lee and Peter Finch, "Ice Cold in Alex" (1958) starring John Mills, Sylvia Syms, Harry Andrews, Diane Clare and Liam Redmond, "The Guns of Navarone" (1961) starring Gregory Peck, James Robertson Justice, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Gia Scala, James Darren and Stanley Baker, "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) starring alongside Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Jose Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy and Claude Rains and Omar Sharif, and "Anne of the Thousand Days" (1969) starring Richard Burton as King Henry VIII and Genevieve Bujold as Anne Boleyn, Irene Papas plays Catherine of Aragon, John Colicos, Michael Hordern, Katharine Blake, Peter Jeffrey, Joseph O'Conor, William Squire, Vernon Dobtcheff, Denis Quilley, Esmond Knight, T. P. McKenna and Elizabeth Taylor, a role for which he earned an Academy Award nomination.
Quayle also had a very likeable voice which was used to narrate, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (1970) the aviation documentary series, "Reaching for the Skies" and various radio programs. Other film roles included the British-Canadian thriller, "Murder By Decree" (1979) starring with Christopher Plummer, James Mason, Susan Clark, David Hemmings, Donald Sutherland, John Gielgud, Genevieve Bujold and Frank Finlay and appearances on such television shows as, "Armchair Theatre" and "The Theban Plays by Sophocles.
In addition to his career as an actor he was also a published author with two novels written about experiences he had during World War II, "Eight Hours from England" and "On Such a Night". He was also the founder of the Compass Theatre Company in 1984.
Anthony Quayle married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Hermione Hannen in 1934 however by 1941 this marriage ended in divorce. He then wed Dorothy Hyson in 1947 and they had three children together and remained married until he passed away on October 20th, 1989 in London, England after suffering from liver cancer.
