ANN SHERIDAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ann Sheridan was born on February 21st, 1915 in Denton, Texas with the birth name Clara Lou Sheridan. She was the youngest of five children and was a very athletic young lady. Her original intentions were to pursue a career as a teacher, however one of her sisters felt that Ann was so beautiful, she entered her photo in a "Search for Beauty" contest for Paramount Studio's and Ann won the contest. The winning prize was a screen test and also a small part in a film.
At the age of eighteen, Paramount signed her to a contract and she was cast in a number of small roles still credited under her birth name. As she began to add roles to her resume, her name was changed from Clara to Ann and by 1936, Warner Brothers took her on another contract and they nicknamed her the "Oomph" girl.
Ann had no issue portraying a variety of different characters and the public really took to her. Some of her early film role were on such features as, "Angels With Dirty Faces" (1938), "Torrid Zone" (1940), "They Drive by Night" (1940) and I Was a Male War Bride" (1949). She also appeared on the soap opera, "Another World" (1964) and the Western Series, "Pistols 'n' Petticoats" (1966). She was receiving around 250 marriage proposals per week in fan mail and was a very popular pin up girl of the 1940's.
However, as fast as her career inclined it also began to see a decline and her age was really beginning to show through, especially in her last film role, "Woman and the Hunter" (1957). Film roles were becoming less available to her, but she was just regaining some popularity from viewers when, sadly, she was unable to beat her fight with cancer and lost her life on January 21st, 1967 in Los Angeles, California at the age of fifty one.
Ann Sheridan married three times throughout her life. Her first marriage was to Edward Norris from August 16th, 1936 and they were only together for two years before she divorced and married for a second time to George Brent in 1942 but this marriage too was short lived and ended in 1943. Her third and final marriage was to Scott McKay from June 5th, 1966 and they were together until Ann lost her life way before her time.
She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the Motion Picture Industry.
