Ann Harding ACTOR

Ann Harding was born on August 7th, 1901 in Fort Sam Houston Texas with the birth name Dorothy Walton Gatley.  Her parents were in the military and so she spent most of her youth moving around to various locations until her family finally chose to settle in New York when she had already completed High School.
Harding found work as with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and put attending college on hold due to financial issues.  She then found work as a reader with the Lasky Company.  Throughout High School in Pennsylvania she had participated in a number of school productions, but never had a major interest in pursuing a career as an actress.  However, when she attended a play in New York City, she found out the acting company was having auditions and so she decided to try out.
Anne was chosen for the part and in 1921 she made her stage debut in, "Inheritors".  After receiving great reviews, Ann changed her career goals and decided to pursue a career as an actress.  Her parents were not pleased with her choice, but she felt this was a good decision for her.  The next eight years were spent working on Broadway gaining experience as a stage actress.
In 1929, Anne decided to enter the film industry and was signed by Pathe Studio's making her film debut in, "Paris Bound" (1929) followed by a role in, "Condemned" (1929) for which she was loaned out to United Artists.  The 1930's were a busy decade for her starring in such films as, "Holiday" (1930), "The Girl of the Golden West" (1930), "East Lynne" (1931), "Prestige", "Westward Passage", "The Conquerors" and "The Animal Kingdom" (all 1932).  In 1933 she did four more films and then slowed down the roles she took.  Harding began to get a little picky as to which films she chose to work on and began to show more of a concern for the quality of films she did and not the quantity.
After in 1937, Harding decided to take a five year break from the film industry and in 1942 she returned with a role in, "Eyes in the Night" (1942).  As her career progressed she would work on a film every couple years and then would take a break again.  Her final big screen appearance was in, "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" (1956).  She continued to work on stage and a number of television appearances such as on, "Kraft Theatre" (1947), "The Defenders" (1961) and "Dr. Kildare" (1961).  Her last acting experience was in 1965 in an episode of, "Ben Casey", before she retired 100% from acting.
Anne Harding passed away on September 1st, 1981 in Sherman Oaks, California at the age of eighty.  She married twice throughout her lifetime, first to Harry Bannister from 1926 through 1932 and had one daughter, Jane born in 1928.  Her second marriage was in 1937 through 1963 producing another daughter, Grace Kaye Janssen.
Ann Harding as the first female star to ever join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and also held the rank of 2nd Vice President.  She was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the Motion Picture and Television industry.  After she passed, she was cremated and her urn was placed in the Court of Remembrance wall at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California.
