Andy Devine ACTOR

Andy Devine was born on October 7th, 1905 in Flagstaff, Arizona with the birth name Andrew Vabre Devine.  Andy was raised in Kingman, Arizona and his father, Thomas Devine worked as a hotel operator.  As a child he was very athletic and later on in his life went on to play professional semi-pro football for sometime.
He attended a number of colleges studying and playing football such as, St. Mary & St. Benedict, Arizona State Teacher's College and Santa Clara University.  After completing his schooling he decided to relocate to Hollywood and see if he had a chance at a career as an actor.
Andy began with working on a variety of films in a number of small roles and his first decent part in a 'talkie' film was in, "The Spirit of Notre Dame" (1931) with Lew Ayres, William Bakewell, Sally Blane and J. Farrell MacDonald, followed by, "Three Wide Girls" (1932) starring Jean Harlow, Marie Provost and Mae Clark and working with John Ford on the film, "Stagecoach" (1939) starring John Wayne, Claire Trevor, John Carradine, Thomas Mitchell, Tim Holt, Tom Tyler and George Bancroft.  A classic film "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" (1944) starring Jon Hall, Maria Montez, Frank Puglia and Turhan Bey showed his versatility.  In 1946 he worked on the film, "Canyon Passage" in which his two sons were cast to play his sons in the film.  Andy also appeared more then seventy five times on Jack Benny's radio show between 1936 and 1942.
His trademark became his raspy voice which helped benefit his career and for the next forty five years he became a well known actor appearing on screen over 100 times.  He became even more popular when he was cast in, "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" (1951) starring with Guy Madison which aired on television as well as radio.  He appeared in a number of films in the 1950's such as, "The Red Badge of Courage" (1951) starring Audie Murphy, "Island in the Sky" (1953) starring John Wayne, Lloyd Nolan, James Arness, Walter Abel, Louis Jean Heydt, Darryl Hickman, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, Fess Parker, Paul Fix, James Lydon, Regis Toomey, Allyn Joslyn, George Chandler, Bob Steele, Wally Cassell, Harry Carey Jr. and Mike Connors, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) with an all star cast consisting of James Stewart, Edmond O'Brien, Vera Miles, Woody Strode, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, John Carradine, Strother Martin, Willis Bouchey, Carleton Young, Robert F. Simon, Denver Pyle, Shug Fisher, Ken Murray, Jeanette Nolan, John Qualen and Lee Van Cleef, "Pete Kelly's Blues" (1955) starring Jack Webb, "Two Rode Together" (1961) with an ensemble cast including James Stewart, Richard Widmark, Shirley Jones, John McIntire, Sal Mineo, Linda Cristal, Willis Bouchey, Henry Brandon, Ken Curtis, Jeanette Nolan, Ford Rainey, Anna Lee, John Qualen, Harry Carey Jr. and Woody Strode, "The Over-the-Hill Gang" (1969) starring Walter Brennan, Pat O'Brien. Chill Wills, Edgar Buchanan, Gypsy Rose Lee, Ricky Nelson, William Smith, Edward Andrews and Jack Elam and the sequel next year "The Over-the-Hill Gang Rides Again" (1970) starring Walter Brennan, Fred Astaire, Chill Wills, Edgar Buchanan, Paul Richards, Walter Burke, Lana Wood and Parley Baer.
Then in 1955 he became the host of a television show called, "Andy's Gang" followed by portraying the character, Hap Gorman on the television series, "Flipper" (1964).  Devine appeared in numerous other television shows including "Bonanza", "The Barbara Stanwyck Show". "Twilight Zone", "The Rounders", "Burke's Law", "Wagon Train" and "The Ford Show" and Andy also worked as a stage actor, making his stage debut in 1957 in a production of, "Show Boat" at a theatre in Long Island, New York.  Devine also was able to take advantage of his raspy voice by doing voice over work in some animated films such as in Walt Disney's, "Robin Hood" and on some Kellogg's Corn Flake commercials.
Andy married only once to Dorothy Devine in 1933 through his death on February 18th, 1977 in Orange, California from leukemia.  He was survived by his wife and two children, Tad and Denny.  Andy Devine was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to television and radio.
