He attended Alfred G. Berner High School where he was very involved in playing football and after high school he went to George Washington University and then decided to transfer to New York University to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
Alec first began his career in entertainment working as a stage actor making his Broadway debut in a production of, "Loot" (1988) followed by roles in such stage productions as, "Serious Money", "A Streetcar Named Desire" and later in his career he performed in the stage production of, "Macbeth" (1998).
Soon he began working on television shows beginning with the soap opera, "The Doctors" (1980-1982).  It did not take long for more television series roles to come his way such as, "Knot's Landing" (1984-1986).  He also did the voice over work for the children's television series, "Thomas and Friends" for all fifty two episodes.
As his career progressed he made appearances on such television series as, "Friends", "Will & Grace", "Nip/Tuck" and "30 Rock" for which he received two Emmy's, two Golden Globes and five Screen Actors Guild Awards.

He starred in, "Pearl Harbor" (2001) and "The Cooler" (2003) for which he was once again honored with an Academy Award, Golden globe and Screen Actors nomination.  His career did not slow down either, as he continued to appear on the big screen in such feature films as, "The Aviator" (2004), "The Departed" (2006) and Mini's First Time" (2006).
Some of his latest film appearances have been on, "Suburban Girl" (2007), "It's Complicated' (2009) and soon to release in 2012, "Lucky Them".
