Alan Hale Sr. ACTOR
ALAN HALE SR. BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Alan Hale Sr. was born on February 10th, 1892 in Washington, District of Columbia with the birth name Rufus Alan MacKahan. He began his career goals as an Opera Singer, but after that did not go as planned he turned his sights on working as a film actor.
He began pretty easily getting cast in a number of supporting roles on a variety of short films and silent films. His first silent and screen debut was as the star of "The Cowboy and the Lady" (1911). He also starred in a number of films for Cecile B. DeMille as well as had the chance to direct a number of other films for him. Some of his earlier film work were on such features as, "Skyscrapper" (1928) starring with William Boyd, "Fog Over Frisco" starring Bette Davis, William Demarest, Hugh Herbert, Donald Woods, Margaret Lindsay, Irving Pichel and Lyle Talbot, "The Little Minister" starring Katharine Hepburn, Donald Crisp and Andy Clyde and "It Happened One Night" starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert (all 1934).
When sound films came about he was cast as the lead in a number of them such as, "Of Human Bondage" (1934) starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis and Frances Dee, "The Last Days of Pompeii" (1935) starring Preston Foster, Louis Calhern and Basil Rathbone, "The Sea Hawk" (1940) co-starring Errol Flynn, Donald Crisp, Claude Rains, Brenda Marshall, Gilbert Roland and William Lundigan, "Santa Fe Trail" (1940) starring with Errol Flynn again and also Ronald Reagan, Olivia de Havilland, Raymond Massey, Van Heflin, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams and Arthur Kennedy, "The Strawberry Blonde" (1941) also starring James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, Rita Hayworth, George Tobias and Jack Carson, "Captains of the Clouds" (1942) starring alongside James Cagney, Brenda Marshall, George Tobias and Dennis Morgan and "Action in the North Atlantic" (1943) starring Humphrey Bogart, Raymond Massey, Ruth Gordon and Dane Clark.
Soon he was working non stop as one of the busiest character actors in the industry. Alan was known as one of the members of "Warner Brothers Stock Co." which was a group of character actors and actresses who did mostly Warner Brothers films during the 1930's and 1940's.
He is best known for his role in the film "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains, and he repeated the role of Little John in 1950 on the film "Rogues of Sherwood Forest" starring John Derek, Diana Lynn and George Macready.
Hale married only once, to Gretchen Hartman, from 1914 through his death on January 22nd, 1950. They had three children. He passed away in Los Angeles, California from a liver ailment and a viral infection.
His son is also a famous actor, Alan Hale Jr., known for his role as the Skipper on the television series "Gilligan's Island". In total Alan Hale Sr. directed eight movies and acted in two hundred and thirty five theatrical films.
