AL 'FUZZY' ST. JOHN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Al 'Fuzzy' St. John was born on September 10th, 1893 in Santa Ana, California with the birth name Alfred St. John.  Around 1912 he became involved with the film industry working on silent films.  He was able to define the comic role of, 'Sidekick' throughout his career.
 
He began with short films as a co star and star.  He was able to get a break into the industry due to his uncle, Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle and his connection to Mack Sennett Studio's, however, St. John proved his talent and remained working in the industry for many years.
 
He appeared many times with Arbuckle on screen such as in, "Fatty and Mabel Adrift" (1916) and with Charlie Chaplin in, "The Rounders" (1914).  After St John had done a couple more films and gained more exposure he joined his Uncles production company and his uncle cast him in a number of silent and sound comedy films, some of which included, "The Iron Mule" (1925) and "Bridges Wives" (1932).
 
During the sound film era, it was not difficult for St. John to make the transition.  He appeared on screen in, "Love Nest on Wheels" (1937) and he portrayed the character, 'Fuzzy Q Jones' in the Billy the Kid Series, The Lone Rider Series and the Billy the Kid/Billy Carson Series all with Poverty Row studio Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC).  

He was an adored actor especially in Europe and since each episode took only a week to film, he appeared in a total of 36 films with Larry 'Buster' Crabbe.  After Crabbe left PRC, St. John was partnered with another sidekick actor, Lash LaRue.  He made over eighty films playing the 'Fuzzy' character. 
 
Interestingly, the nickname 'Fuzzy' actually belonged to another actor first, John Forrest 'Fuzzy' Knight who was intended to play the cowboy sidekick character before St. John took over the role and kept the 'Fuzzy' nickname.
 
Viewers also enjoyed the fact that in the majority of St. John's films he was also given a chance to perform a solo comedy act which would incorporate acrobatics and hilarious comedy.
 
Al 'Fuzzy' St. John married twice during his lifetime, first to Flo Belle Moore from October 5th, 1914 through March 19th, 1923 after having one daughter, Mary Jane born in 1918.  His second marriage was to June Price Pearce from 1926 and it is unknown how long the marriage lasted, but he fathered no other children.  

On January 21st, 1963  Al St. John was traveling west working on a Wild West show when he passed away in Lyons, Georgia after suffering from a heart attack.
