Akim Tamiroff ACTOR

Akim Tamiroff was born with the birth name Akim Mikhailovich Tamiroff on October 29th, 1899 in  Tiflis, Russian Empire now Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia.  When he was nineteen years old he decided to pursue a career as an actor and out of 500 applicants, he was chosen to attend the Moscow Art Theater School.  After studying there he begun his career as a stage actor.
During one of his stage tours he traveled to New York City and liked it so much he decided to stay there.  He was hired to work on Broadway and worked steadily between 1920 and the 1930's with the Theatre Guild.  Akim then felt it was time to see if he could move his career towards working in the film industry.
In 1932 he moved to Los Angeles and debuted in the film, "Okay America" (1932).  This role followed with a number of other small parts.  Then in 1934 he did a total of twelve films and in 1935, fifteen films completed in one year.  Some of his early films roles were on, "The Lives of Bengal Lancer"(1935) and then received the title role in the film, "The General Died at Dawn" (1936) for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.  A number more of film roles followed such as, "High, Wide, and Handsome" (1937), "The Buccaneer" (1938), "The Great McGinty" (1940), "The Corsican Brothers" (1941), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943), "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" (1944), "Touch of Evil" (1958), "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) and "Alphaville" (1965) amongst many others.
He is most remembered for his role as the boss in the Great McGinty inspired cartoon character, Boris Badenov.  He also remained on call for Welles's unfinished film, "Don Quixote" (1992), which was released twenty years after he passed away.
Tamiroff married only once to Tamara Shayne who he remained with until he passed away on September 17th, 1972 from cancer.  His remains were cremated and ashes were scattered.  He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry.  He was a very earthy and flamboyant character and will always be remembered as one of the greatest character actors of all times.
